BBC rapport over gamers
25 januari 2006BBC Creative Research and Development brachten recent een studie uit onder de titel 'Gamers in the UK - Digital play, digital lifestyles'. Deze opzienbarende en mooi vormgegeven publicatie behandelt de gewoonten van gamers in het Verenigd Koninkrijk van 6 tot 65 jaar.
Een uittreksel:
Contrary to popular belief, the gender split between gamers is fairly even across all age groups. Although female gamers never overtake their male counterpart, the figures are particularly even in the youngest and oldest gaming groups. Between the ages of 16-35 the ratio of males to females is slightly higher, but the stereotype of a large gender gap in gamers - in any age group - is untrue.
Females and males do however display some different prefer- ences in gaming categories. Simulations and MMOGs perform equally well with males and females, while RPGs and Strategy fare only marginally better with males. Females then show strong approval for Music/Dance, Puzzles/Board/Quiz, and Classic games. Males show strong approval for Action- Adventure, Racing, Sports, and First Person Shooters. Simula- tions and MMOGs seem to be key to attracting audiences of both genders equally: Sports and Shooting category games generally hold the lowest appeal for females, although it should be noted that this doesn't mean they have no appeal: 12% of females play First Person Shooters.

AMUZ een vrijplaats voor experiment
20 januari 2006Tijdens het weekend van 13 tot 15 januari opende AMUZ - Augustinus Muziekcentrum feestelijk de deuren. De reacties in de pers liegen er niet om. Antwerpen heeft er een schitterende concertzaal bij. AMUZ wil een aanvulling zijn binnen het huidige muzieklandschap en zoekt aansluiting bij een zo divers mogelijk publiek. De buurt - en wijkbewoners waren op donderdag 12 januari de eersten die een concert bijwoonden in de vernieuwde concertkerk. Over de 9 concerten kwamen er even zoveel verschillende publieken over de drempel... en ze zagen dat het goed was. Ik hoop dat in de toekomst steeds meer mensen de weg zullen vinden naar de kerk in de Kammenstraat.
K&L begeleidde de lancering van AMUZ van bij de opmaak van het dossier, tot de opstart van de communicatiecampagne over de begeleiding van het AMUZ-team. Het werd een boeiende en fijne samenwerking.

Cory Doctorow te gast in het MuHKA

Op dinsdag 24 januari (19u30) geeft Cory Doctorrow een lezing in het MuHKA te Antwerpen. Doctorrow is een science fiction schrijver die publiceert onder de creative commons licentie, was Director of European Affairs voor de Electonic Frontier Foundation en blogt mee op het overbekende Boing Boing.
"In his lecture Doctorow will show you that American entertainment companies say they're fighting piracy, but in fact they're going at it by punishing the innocent to get at the guilty. A pan-European digital-television restrictions proposal will turn the studios from companies that can control copying of movies into companies that can control the design of all DTV devices, that get to define how big your family is allowed to be, that get to take away all the rights you get under copyright law and sell them back to you, one painful, expensive dribble at a time.It's not really a business plan: more like a urinary tract infection. Europe's coming Broadcast Flag will ban open source for DTV, break the devices in your living room, and turn you into a truly captive audience. Get your torch and pitchfork, for this genuinely sucks -- and you shouldn't take it lying down!
